Coca-cola company assists Chinese needy students

The Chengdu Coca-cola Beverage Co.,Ltd. and the Sichuan Provincial Poverty Reduction Fund jointly launched a program recently to help needy university students who have done well in their studies. The program is designed to provide financial assistance to needy university students and help develop their specific talents and assist their personal growth. As part of the program, the Chengdu Coca-cola Beverage Co., Ltd. will establish a scholarship from its sales income to be used as grants for needy students in universities and colleges in Sichuan Province, southwest China. In addition, the company will also arrange work during holidays and weekends for those students so that they can finish their schooling. It also has plans to train university students in management and marketing skills. Before the program, the Chengdu Coca-cola Beverage Co., Ltd. had funded two Project Hope primary schools and one Project Hope school on the Internet, and dozens of university students from poor rural families. From 1993 to now, the company has funded 52 Project Hope elementary schools, 100 Project Hope stacks rooms and helped more than 60,000 former dropouts return to schools. The Project Hope is a national program launched by the China Youth Development Foundation to assist elementary students from poor families in the countryside. In 1999, the Coca-cola Co. aided financially 678 university students from poverty-stricken rural families. This year, the company offered financial aid to 140 promising junior middle school students in China. |
