Cultural History Show to Be Held in New York
|
7-Oct-2004 - |
Sinologists and art lovers in New York are to be treated to a festival of Chinese history at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. The showcase is being billed as the largest Chinese cultural history show ever to be held in the United States. The exhibition is named "Towards the Peak Period of Tang Dynasty (AD 618-907)" and opens on October 12. Some 400 precious cultural artefacts dating back more than 2,000 years - including many that have been never on display outside China - will be on show. The event will last till January 23 next year. It may then move to Hong Kong, said the China News Service. The exhibition has been approved by the State Administration of Cultural Heritage (SACH) and sponsored by the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the China Cultural Relics Exchange Center. The items on show bear witness to the extent of international trade relations between China and the outside world at the time of the Tang Dynasty. Ancient Chinese civilization is believed to have been at its zenith at that time. Bronze wares, ceramics, lacquer wares and jade artifacts as well as gold and silver articles will offer visitors a step back in time and insight into Chinese history. The lacquer folding screen discovered in Datong in north China's Shanxi Province is believed by experts to be the most valuable exhibit on display. It was once included on national list of relics prohibited to be displayed abroad. But after gaining special permission from the State Council, the screen was finally allowed to travel to New York. Selected from thousands of valuable pieces displayed at 47 museums and collection institutes in 14 municipalities, provinces and autonomous regions in China, the exhibits showcase cultural articles from late Han Dynasty (206 BC - AD 220) to Tang Dynasty. The show contains seven sections in chronological sequence: Eastern Han (AD 25-220), Western Jin (AD 265-316), Northern Wei (AD 386-534), Western Wei (AD 535-556), Northern Zhou (AD 557-581), Sui Dynasty (AD 581-618) and Tang Dynasty. Leading expert Shan Jixiang, director of SACH, arrived in New York last week to help organize the exhibition. |
