Danxia Mountain in Shaoguan City, Guangdong Province, has been added onto the World Heritage List. A representative of UNESCO announced the confirmation in Shaoguan on Monday. "UNESCO has incorporated the following 25 geological parks, including Danxia Mountain, into the world geological parks network. The incorporation demonstrates the confirmation of the uniqueness and importance of the place where this geological relic lies. Xu Jianhua, mayor of Shaoguan City, said listing of Danxia Mountain in the World Heritage List marked a new page in the protection of the geological relics on Danxia Mountain. Xu said the city was committed to building Danxia Mountain into an international tourist attraction where scientists could conduct scientific research and tourists can travel and relax. The UNESCO representative, Hans Schonlau, praised the beauty of Danxia Mountain and said it was the common property of all humans. "You can not find such unique geological features in any other place in the world. I will recommend Danxia Mountain to the world, especially Europe, so that tourists from all over the world will come to admire the beauty of Danxia Mountain," said Schonlaub, director of Austria's Geological Review Bureau. Danxia Mountain will be built into a "open geological museum" where a variety of activities such as science education, sightseeing, hiking and camping can be held, according to the preliminary plan of the Shaoguan municipal government. Experts attending the meeting have called for the promulgation of laws and regulations to preserve the geological features of the mountain. |
