The prize, awarded annually, consists of a golden statue of Lu Ban, China's "patron saint" of carpentry. Born in 606 BC, Lu Ban was China's first wood working master. Chinese Minister of Construction Wang Guangtao said at the awards ceremony that the Lu Ban Prize has played a positive role during the past 16 years in promoting the quality of China's construction work and increasing competition in the construction industry. Chinese construction firms should maintain a rational balance between costs and profits and should not engage in excessive spending in order to win the prize, said Wang. The firms should use their funds wisely and maintain order in the market. China has a total of 100,000 construction firms, with the number of employees nearing 34 million.
