Wetlands have been called "nature's kidneys" because of their cleansing function in ecosystems. China is one of the countries in the world with the most diversified kinds of wetlands. During a reporting tour of the Beihai Wetlands in south China's Yunnan Province, a team of CRI reporters was delighted to breathe sweet, crisp air—one of the wetlands' outstanding features.
The Beihai Wetlands in Tengchong County were created by a dammed lake after volcanic eruptions about 600,000 years ago. The 16.29-square-kilometer area is now a national reserve, home to numerous migratory birds, some of which are rare species. Every year between April and May, wildflowers bloom across the flat, expansive wetlands, attracting large numbers of tourists.
The wetlands are about 10 kilometers from Tengchong County which is connected to major Chinese cities by train, highway and air routes.
Entry tickets cost 30 yuan per person, and visitors can take a boat ride amid the thick vegetation that grows in the shallow water. |
