Five trends in China's IPR protection campaign

20-Jul-2005 - People's Daily
As reporter learns from the State Work Group on Intellectual Property Rights (IPRs) Protection, the Chinese government attaches great importance to IPR protection and has kept intensifying efforts in crackdown on IPR infringement crimes.

The IPR protection campaign takes on five trends in China:

Both registered case number and amount of money involved have increased. Since 1998 the public security organs across China have reported 7,874 registered IPR infringement cases and the number still increases year by year. The amount of money involved totaled 210 mln yuan in 2001 and the figure increased to 630 mln yuan in 2004. The average annual growth rate hits 42 percents.

Infringement of well-known trademarks has become key target of crackdown. The public security organs in China have registered 5, 839 well-known trademarks infringement cases since 1998, representing 74 percent of all IPR infringement cases.

Cases infringing business secrets have risen. From 1998 to 2003, the public security organs in China have registered more than 500 business secrets infringement cases, with 600 mln yuan involved, accounting for 32 percent of total value of IPR infringement cases.

To cope with more and more hidden IPR infringement crimes China has strengthened construction of a professional team specializing in IPR protection, and enhanced technological methods in combating IPR infringement crimes. China's IPR protection has become increasingly professional.

Facing cross-border IPR infringement crimes that have taken place in recent years, China has kept strengthening cooperation with international community. It has established cooperative mechanisms with countries like the US, and intensified its efforts to crack down on cross-border IPR infringement crimes.
