Gathering Commemorates Relocation of Xibe People
|
10-Jun-2002 - |
Nearly 2,000 people of the Xibe ethnic minority group attended a gathering in northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region recently to celebrate their traditional festival and commemorate the 238th anniversary of the group's relocation from northeast China to Xinjiang.
In 1764, more than 4,000 Xibe people living in Shenyang, northeast China's Liaoning Province, were sent by the government to guard the frontier at Ili, Xinjiang. Their descendants live there still.
An official of the regional government said that, even after all these years, the Xibe people in Xinjiang still keep their unique culture, language and customs.
Of all China's nationalities, the Xibe boasts the highest ratio of college and vocational school graduates. With a talent for languages, the Xibe people are dubbed in China as "a nationality of translators".
Meanwhile, there are still Xibe people living in northeast China.
