Transportation departments in southern China's Guangdong province transported about 39.46 million passengers during the period from Jan. 17 to Jan. 31, up 10.6 percent over the same period last year, according to local government sources. During this peak season before the Chinese Lunar New year, the number of rail passengers reached 4.894 million, up 3.7 percent over last year's figure. Bus passengers numbered 32.856 million, sea passengers 0.839 million and air passengers 0.87 million, up 11, 19.9 and 21 percent, respectively. Guangzhou, the provincial capital, which saw 7.28 million passengers, remains the largest transportation center. The transportation department of Dongguan city, famous for its electronic joint ventures, saw 0.84 million passengers, up 23.7 percent, the biggest increase in the province. The Spring Festival, which is being celebrated across the country, is one of China's most important holidays, and the "Spring Festival Crush" is an annual headache for China's transportation authorities. As one of China's most economically developed provinces, Guangdong has several million Chinese from other provinces working there, most of whom are expected to return home during the Spring Festival holidays. |
