Guangzhou's new international airport to open on August 5
|
9-Jul-2004 - |
A long-awaited new airport in the southern Chinese metropolis of GuangZhou is set for an August 5 opening, after repeated delays due to problems during "operational rehearsals," state press said. The Baiyun International Airport was originally due to open on June 28, but over 200 problems surfaced during two dress rehearsals, forcing administrators to move back the first touchdowns until August, the China Daily reported. The new airport lies north of the present Baiyun Airport in the northern Huadu suburb of the Guangdong provincial capital formerly known as Canton. The old airport is set to close the day before the new airport opens with essential equipment disconnected from the old airport and transferred to the new facility overnight. The airport, estimated to have cost 2.36 billion dollars, is designed by American firms Parsons Corp and URS Greiner Corp along with the Guangdong Provincial Architectural Design Institute. It can accomodate the world's largest planes, such as Boeing 747s. |
