|
19-Dec-2007 - Xinhua |
An estimated 9 million people will cross checkpoints in and out of Hong Kong during the upcoming Christmas and New Year holidays, an increase of 9.1 percent over the same period last year, the Hong Kong Immigration Department said here Tuesday.
The peak period of cross-boundary traffic will fall between Dec. 21 and Jan. 2, the department said.
It is estimated that about 3.8 million passengers, or a daily average of 289,000, will use the Lo Wu checkpoint, representing 58percent of total estimated cross-boundary passenger traffic.
The number of departing passengers at Lo Wu may reach a peak of238,000 on Dec. 24, while the arrival peak will be on Dec. 26, with 200,000 people returning to Hong Kong. The highest daily traffic is expected to reach 363,000 on Dec. 24.
Passenger traffic at Lok Ma Chau checkpoint will also be heavy with a forecast of about 1.6 million passengers, or a daily average of 122,000. The departure peak is expected to fall on Dec.24, with about 82,000 people leaving for the Chinese mainland. The number of arriving passengers at Lok Ma Chau may reach a peak of 93,000 on Dec. 26.
The department has arranged for extra officers to be posted at checkpoints during the holiday period. Lo Wu checkpoint will implement the contra-flow scheme to relieve congestion, if necessary.
A joint command center will be set up at Lo Wu checkpoint and contingency measures have been drawn up to handle any incidents.
To avoid congestion at Lo Wu and Lok Ma Chau checkpoints, passengers can use the new Shenzhen Bay control point and Lok Ma Chau Spur Line control point. |
