THE National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) of China has approved plans to expand Shanghai's Hongqiao Airport.
According to the commission, the airport expansion will see the addition of a second, 3,300m-long runway, and a 250,000m2 terminal by 2010. The new terminal will be linked to high-speed railways and intercity railways and subways.
The NRDC said the project is expected to cost over RMB15.3 billion (US$2 billion), with the aim of making Shanghai an aviation hub for the Asia-Pacific region in the lead up to the Shanghai Expo in 2010.
As one of the largest airports in China, Hongqiao is expected to handle 40 million passengers by 2010, more than four times its current capability.
