|
25-Oct-2001 - |
Ten Taiwanese tourists are set to fly home Friday, with a stopover in Hong Kong, after making a full recovery from shock following a fatal bus accident in Southwest China's Guizhou Province on Monday. The remaining 11 Taiwanese will continue to stay in a leading hospital in Guiyang, capital of Guizhou Province. Local authorities said yesterday that they will head home in the near future. Matters in the wake of the mishap, which killed three mainland people on the highway between Guiyang and Huangguo-shu, including compensation from the insurance companies, settlement for the three dead and transfer of the seriously injured to Taiwan Province are under way. The investigation into the accident is ongoing and local authorities said the results are expected very soon. Reports indicate the Taiwanese tourists' bus hit the back of a broken-down truck that was being repaired on the roadside. The driver of the bus, a local guide and the truck driver were killed instantly. The 21 Taiwanese suffered a variety of injuries. Three Taiwanese tourists were seriously injured, one with head injuries. All three were in a stable condition. "Their recovery is progressing very well. Many of them have left the hospital for shopping, showers and other reasons with the permission of medical experts. They are putting this nightmare behind them. The panic has gone," said Yang Jun, deputy director of the provincial Tourism Administration Bureau. Eight relatives of the injured tourists and a representative of the Taiwan-based travel agency that arranged the tour have been in Guiyang, according to the provincial office of Taiwan affairs. "I am very satisfied with all the efforts here. We got all we needed and matters related to the accident are being dealt with smoothly," said Zhang Jiazhi, head of the tourist group. International SOS Hong Kong, a 24-hour emergency assistance provider, has sent a nurse to Guizhou Province to check the casualties on behalf of the insurance companies. She will communicate with the tourists about compensation. According to Ivor Wai, SOS Hong Kong's manager, most of the tourists are policyholders of Taiwan Cathay Life Insurance Company and Aetna Life Insurance Company. |
