Some 64 species of wild animals and 55 strains of wild plants are under state protection in east China"s Jiangxi Province, a newly released survey said in Nanchang Monday.
Having passed state verification, this survey gave for the first time a clear-cut profile of local wildlife resources in Jiangxi.
After researching a total of 110 animals and 61 plants over the past five years, experts said that some of the wildlife resources of great scientific or cultural value were on the verge of extinction.
Human disregard for the wildlife and the poor adaptability of some species to natural environment were attributed to their dyingout.
Experts suggested that rescue work should be carried out including the protection of wildlife"s habitats, establishment of reserves and development of artificial reproduction technology.
Besides reports featuring research results, a database on animal and plant resources was also established together with a map showing distribution of species.
Since 1997, some 4,500 people including dozens of experts and scholars have been involved in the survey. |
