Last respects paid to renowned Buddhist master

Over 500 officials, Buddhist followers and ordinary citizens gathered at the Longhua Temple in Shanghai on July 27 to bid farewell to Ming Yang, a renowned Buddhist master. Chinese President Jiang Zemin and other senior officials presented floral baskets in memory of the Buddhist master. Ming Yang, vice president of China Buddhist Association and a Standing Committee member of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, died on July 23, at the age of 87. Ming Yang became a monk when he was 11 years old and had since devoted his life to preaching Buddhist principles across China. He has played a due role in boosting the country's religious exchanges with other countries. Ming Yang and his disciples have contributed to the cultural and ethical progress in Shanghai, where he served as president of the municipal Buddhist association. He is also remembered as a high-profile social activist and philanthropist for his contribution to charity and education as well as relief to many disaster-stricken areas. |
