China will invest one billion yuan to expand the airport in Lijiang. After the expansion, the airport will be able to handle 4.05 million passengers every year to become the second largest airport in Yunnan province.
The information was revealed Wednesday by He Zixing, an official in Lijiang, which is a renowned scenic spot in China.
After expansion, the new Lijiang airport will also become an air hub for the Shangri-la tourist route located among Yunnan, Sichuan and Tibet. It will connect with Tibet and Sichuan in the north and extend to Laos and Thailand in the south via Xishuangbanna.
It will complement Kunming, the capital of Yunnan, to become another transportation center in the province and link with Hong Kong to serve as an international transportation channel in Yunnan, He Zixing said.
The official said that the new Lijiang Airport will be the only airport constructed in Yunnan as an open port according to China's Eleventh Five-Year Plan. When it is completed, there will be three open airports in Yunnan, with the center airport located in Kunming, and two supplement airports located in Xishuangbanna and Lijiang.
In addition, Lijiang airport will become the 45th mainland airport linking with Hong Kong.
Located in the northwestern part of Yunnan Province, Lijiang is a popular destination of tourists from home and abroad for its beautiful natural scenery and unique Naxi ethnic culture. Last year, well over 4 million tourists went to Lijiang for sightseeing and by 2008, the number of tourists to Lijiang is expected to reach 7 million. |
