China Mobile topped a list of the nation's best-performing brands based on a survey conducted by brand consultancy Interbrand and published in BusinessChina Weekly.
The list, "Best Chinese Brands," ranks China's top-20 companies by brand value, which Interbrand calculated as the net present value of the earnings a brand is expected to generate and secure.
"Our work in China indicates that branding is a significant focus for management and the investment in their brands are beginning to show valuable return. China is clearly emerging as a global brand powerhouse," said Frank Chen, chief executive officer of Interbrand China.
With a brand value of 283 billion yuan (US$35.4 billion), China Mobile outperformed the next-highest ranking 82billion yuan (US$10.25 billion) Bank of China brand several times over. China Construction Bank and China Telecom took third and fourth places respectively.
In order to be considered for the list, brands must originate in Mainland China, the company must be a listed company on a stock exchange so there is publicly available financial information and the brand must directly interact with consumers.
In eighth place, China's renowned alcohol brand Moutai ranks highest of the three listed liquor and wine brands, including Wuliangye and Changyu. With a brand history spanning more than two centuries, Moutai holds 33 per cent of the high-end liquor category's market share.
Gome, China's first and dominant home appliance chain, is the only retail company to make the list. Gome appeared 12th with a brand value of 3.8 billion yuan (US$475 million).
"Chinese brands are increasingly using global best practices and are becoming powerful competitors for established brands both domestically and globally," said Jez Frampton, chief executive officer of Interbrand. "Certain Chinese brands are already global players and we expect that an increasing number will accelerate to this position."
