The Long March for Education, an unprecedented charity walkathon to raise funds for China's school dropouts, launched a campaign looking for more support and participation from local companies and individuals. The march, which will start on October 15, is aimed at raising at least 20 million Hong Kong dollars (US$2.56 million) to build or rebuild 101 Hope schools to provide education to poor students in rural areas. Twenty-four volunteers, including two foreigners, six from Chinese mainland and 16 from Hong Kong, have registered to follow the former steps of the Red Army, which completed the historic Long March about 70 years ago. They will set off at Ruijin, Jiangxi Province, trudge through 10 provinces and autonomous regions, and finally arrive at Wuqi Town, Shaanxi Province. The journey will cover 8,038 kilometers and last for eight months. Each volunteer is required to pay 70,000 yuan (US$8,434) in travel costs and 80,000 yuan as a donation. More participates are welcomed to spend several days walking one section of the total distance. They must pay about 3,000 yuan for the trip and 3,000 yuan as a donation. "We regret that no Shanghai residents have joined us so far," said Johnny Leung, a member of the Hong Kong-based Sowers Action, the organizer of the march.
