Low-cost airline planned for GZ

One of the country's leading travel agencies Guangdong China Travel Service Ltd. (GCTS) is planning to seek a license for a low-cost airline joint venture. GCTS plans to lease a 150-seat aircraft for destinations within five hours flying time from Guangzhou. The company says leased aircraft reduce operating costs for a low-cost airline. The as yet unnamed budget airline plans to team up with GCTS, Singaporean aerospace component supplier A-Sonic Aerospace and Singaporean air cargo operator AirOcean Group. GCTS will take a 51 percent stake in the new company, which will have registered capital of US$12.8 million. It will be the country's first low-cost airline run by a Chinese-foreign joint venture, if the plan is approved by the Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC). Before GCTS announced its plan in Sept., a Shanghai travel agency Spring International had already had its plans for a budget airline approved by CAAC, It is expected to start operating in the second half of 2005. This Shanghai low-cost airline will focus on popular tourist cities such as Hainan, Guilin and Kunming. Experts said travel agencies were keen to set up low-cost airlines, to give themselves more leverage in ticket pricing. |
