Macao bids to host 8th WCEC
|
14-Jun-2002 - |
A delegation of the Macao Chamber of Commerce left Macao on June 9 for Thailand, Malaysia and Singapore to lobby for Macao playing host to the Eighth World Chinese Entrepreneurs Convention (WCEC) in 2005. An official application will be submitted to the WCEC's secretariat in Singapore for scrutiny, as well as a recommendation letter from chief executive Edmund Ho Hau Wah of the special administrative region (SAR), the chamber said. "The SAR government believes that Macao is fully capable of hosting the 8th WCEC in 2005," Edmund Ho said in the letter. The delegation members plan to talk with authorities from the chambers of commerce of the three countries and brief them on the latest investment environment of Macao. President Ma Man Kei of the Macao Chamber of Commerce expressed the hope to consolidate the friendship with counterparts from these countries when he saw off the delegation led by Hoi Sai Iun, the board director of the chamber. Earlier, Macao's idea won support from Hong Kong's chamber of commerce. The 7th WCEC is scheduled for 2003 in Malaysia. Macao sent a delegation, consisting of many well-known entrepreneurs, to attend the Sixth WCEC in Nanjing, capital of east China's Jiangsu Province last September. The World Chinese Entrepreneurs Convention was initiated as a biennial event by Chinese chambers of commerce in Singapore, Thailand and Hong Kong in 1990, with the purpose to unite Chinese entrepreneurs worldwide to jointly promote economic and trade cooperation. |
