Macao's Population Tops 430,000: Census

Macao's population rose 22.4 percent from a decade ago to 435,200 last August, it was revealed Wednesday. The Statistics and Census Services, following a census conducted once every ten years, posted that male and female accounted for 48 and 52 percent respectively of the total population. The 2001 census showed that the special administrative region was bothered by an aging problem with those at and above 65 making up 7.3 percent of the population, up seven-tenths of a percentage point from 1991. More than 95 percent of Macao residents had the Chinese nationalities against 2 percent with the Portuguese nationalities and 1.2 percent with the Filipino ones. At home, 87.9 percent of the Macao people speak Guangdong dialect, compared with 4.4, 1.6 and 0.7 percent using Fujian dialect, Putonghua and Portuguese, respectively. Figures also showed Macao people with a college background had climbed up three percentage points in a decade to account for 7.4 percent of the population. |
