Malaysia, U.S. start first round of FTA talks

Malaysia and the United States on Monday kicked off the first round of talks on the free trade agreement (FTA).
Officials from the two countries started the five-day negotiations in a hotel in Penang state in northern Malaysia, local media reported.
Secretary-General of the Malaysian Ministry of International Trade and Industry, Mohamed Sidek Hassan, will lead the Malaysian delegation while the U.S. Assistant Trade Representative for Asia- Pacific, Barbara Weisel, will speak for his country.
According to American Malaysian Chamber of Commerce (Amcham), the two sides are expected to work out an outcome in the next six months.
"Amcham expects the FTA to be a dynamic agreement that will strengthen Malaysia's long-term relationship with the United States," the chamber said in a statement.
