TOKYO (Reuters) - Japan's Matsushita Electric Industrial Co. said on Tuesday it planned to hire 2,000 local engineers in China over the next three years to bolster its development of products for the promising Chinese market.
Matsushita, owner of the Panasonic brand and the world's largest maker of consumer electronics, hopes local talent will help it achieve its target of doubling sales in China to 1 trillion yen ($9.52 billion) by the business year to March 2007.

"We must secure talented people to accomplish the goals of our 1 trillion yen project -- we need people not only for our sales operations but also to strengthen development and design," Matsushita spokesman Katsumi Takahashi said.

The Osaka-based company plans to have employed 450 new college graduates in China by the time the current business year ends on March 31. It will recruit another 2,000 engineers in the 3 financial years through March 2008.

Matsushita already has recruitment centers in Beijing, Shanghai and Dalian. It plans to open its fourth office in GuangZhou this April to establish ties with universities in that area of the country.

Shares of Matsushita ended Tuesday down 0.06 percent at 1,580 yen. The benchmark Nikkei average gained 0.12 percent on the day.
