Nanjing to Transplant 40,000 Big Trees
|
18-Jan-2002 - |
Over 40,000 big trees will be transplanted this year in Nanjing, capital of east China's Jiangsu Province, to improve the environment and scenery. An official from the city government said that the trees, including chinar, pointed zelkova and maple, will help beautify Nanjing's main roads. He also noted that Nanjing has had an annual increase of one million square meters of public parkland or reserves in recent years, which has provided a much better environment for tourists and residents. Big green trees are a symbol of Nanjing, one of China's "national park cities". The city will also establish a series of theme parks with special trees and flowers. By 2005, about 45 percent of Nanjing will be covered by parkland or reserves, giving 10 square meters per person.(xinhua) |
