22-Oct-2002 - |
Nanjing, capital of east China's Jiangsu Province, has launched a "Green Nanjing" project, to increase grassland and tree coverage to 45 percent before 2005. The project is promising an enchanting picture of a green city in the near future. In the next seven years, Nanjing will have 93,000 hectares of newly forested land. By the year 2010, residents will enjoy 15 square meters of public green land per person. An official of the Nanjing municipal government said that grassland and trees had undoubtedly become part of the identity of the city, attracting tourists both from home and abroad. He also noted that with expansion of the urban area, planting trees and grassland had become a major task for Nanjing in keeping its unique characteristics. |
