No monkeying around as Singapore ushers in New Year
|
7-Jan-2004 - |
THE Singapore Tourism Board (STB) will usher in the lunar new year with a month long marketing campaign to draw more visitors to Singapore from now until February 5. The Chun Jie (or spring festival) campaign is anchored by three Chinese New Year (CNY) events ?the Chinatown Light-Up, Chingay and the Singapore River Hong Bao, together with other fringe activities including The Esplanade Huayi Festival (the Chinese Festival of Arts 2004), the Rainbow Rhapsody at the Chinese Gardens and the flower Garden Fair at Albert mall. This is the first time the board is marketing the three anchor CNY events under a single umbrella event branding. They were previously marketed separately. Director, sightseeing and attractions, Mr Chang Chee Pey, said: By doing so, we believe it will give the CNY festivities in Singapore more focus and identity. In the long run, we aim to groom the Chun Jie branding into an icon for CNY in Singapore. The board's network of regional offices will market the event though radio promotions, advertisements in local dailies, promotional contests and media familiarisation trips. Chun Jie packages featuring special deals on airfares, accommodation, sightseeing tours and goodie bags will also be offered in key markets such as China, Taiwan, Malaysia and Vietnam. Meanwhile since January 1, the visa application process for independent travellers from the Peoples' Republic of China (PRC) who wish to visit Singapore, has been made easier. This follows a successful six-month trial programme launched in July 2003, whereby visa applications for independent travellers could be submitted through three appointed China National Tourism Administration authorised travel agents. The number of authorised agents has since increased to 43 with 322 branches located in major cities across China including Beijing, Shanghai, Jiangsu, Guangzhou, Zhejiang, Chengdu, Kunming, Shenyang, Shenzhen and Xiamen. This new Social Visa scheme allows the PRC visitors to be issued with five week multiple-journey visas, instead of the previous three weeks. Holders of such visas may also be granted a longer stay of up to 30 days upon arrival, instead of the previous 14 days. |
