Overseas architects vie to design Tianjin's symbolic buildings

Five reputable overseas architectural design agencies are competing against each other to design a group of symbolic buildings for the central business district in the Tianjin Development Zone in the east China municipality. The bids are due to be opened in June this year. Construction of the project will start at the end of this year or early next year and be completed in three years at an estimated cost of 3 billion to 5 billion yuan. Tianjin's central business district covers 1.6 sq. km To date, a service center for investors and a customs building are in use. Work on a financial center, library and hospital is well underway.Projects to be built at the 160,000-sq-meter symbolic zone include luxury office blocks, a five-star hotel and commercial buildings. Contracts have been signed between the Tianjin Development Zone and the five overseas design companies from France, Italy, the United States, Germany and Japan. In negotiations with the development zone, they have sought opinions on the design and made field investigations. The Tianjin Development Zone has 3,400 overseas-funded enterprises with a total investment of 17 billion US dollars. Its annual industrial output value averages 12 billion US dollars. |
