|
17-Apr-2008 - |
The Jiarong Tibetan group is one branch of Tibetan Nationality. It enjoys a long and glorious history with a unique culture. Situated in Sichuan Province, Jiarong Tibetan Area is famous for its beautiful scenery, as well as its mysterious and unique culture.
Another Shangri-la
Pattern is an important component in Tibetan Culture, and the patterns painted on the folk houses in the Jiarong Village are especially unique.
The folk houses function in many ways: they're cool in the summer and warm in the winter. The main dwelling houses materials are stones and woods. The walls are piled up by stones, then polished glutinous rice and slaked lime is inserted in between. The inner side of the walls are made of joint planks and column caps.
Religious significance
Chinese Knot and Dorje Phurba
Chinese knot?in the middle?is a sign praying for peace, happiness, and luck.
Jingang Jue (Dorje Phurba) is a ritual tool in Tibetan Buddhism, which means fastness, sharpness and is able to destroy everything.
Some of the patterns on the wall have religious significance. For instance, the Eight Auspicious Signs of Tibetan Buddhism including the Chinese knot is a sign praying for peace, happy and luck. Jingang Jue (Dorje Phurba) is a ritual tool in Tibetan Buddhism, which means fastness, sharpness and is able to destroy everything. It has such strong power that ghosts and devils are terrified by the sight of it. The house-owner has it on the walls, signifying his wish for an unbreakable house in face of disasters and jeopardy. The '?' is very symbolic according to Tibetan Buddhism. As one of the Sakyamuni's Thirty-Two images, it signifies the sun and flame. The sign also exists in Benjiao (Tibetan Buddhism), but in the opposite direction, and has the meaning of eternity, solidity and inexhaustibility. Success, prosperity and luck can also found in the sign. Furthermore, the faith of the house-owner can be inferred from this pattern: if he has the sign on his wall, he is sure to believe in Benjiao. |
