The Shanghai Postal Museum will open to the public late this year in the Post Building on Suzhou Road N., Shanghai Post Bureau officials said yesterday. The impressive building, which is just off the Bund near the mouth of Suzhou Creek, was originally opened to the public on December 1, 1924. It is currently being renovated to celebrate its 80th anniversary. The renovation began late last year. The exact date for the museum to open hasn't been fixed, but it should be before December 1, the bureau said. The building, built in a British and Baroque-style, is on the cultural protection list by the city and enjoys a waterfront view of Suzhou Creek. "The museum is currently being prepared, and the items to be displayed are being collected," said an unidentified bureau official. "We have been collecting items from inside the bureau but we also welcome any public collections," he said. "Anything that shows the development of the postal system in the city is worth displaying." He said the museum will be divided into three parts: a historical hall, a postal tool hall and a stamp hall. Beside the museum, the rest of the building will mainly function as an office center for the bureau. Departments dealing with mail sorting and some other procedures will gradually be moved to post offices around the city. The building is currently the headquarters of the Shanghai Post Bureau. Its business hall will be kept in operation after the completion of the renovation but its space will be reduced. The renovation started on the upper floors of the building, and when it is finished, the business hall will move upstairs for renovation of the first floor. When the entire renovation is finished, the building will be restored to its original look. |
