Poverty Falls in China
|
4-Apr-2005 - China Radio International |
A senior Chinese official has announced the number of Chinese living in poverty fell by 2.9 million last year.
Director of the Poverty Relief Office of the State Council, Liu Jian, says the Chinese government has organized large-scale poverty reduction programs all over the country since 1986.
Despite the great achievements, Liu Jian says the ultimate goal of poverty relief presents a formidable challenge.
This year, the Chinese government has committed 13 billion yuan or nearly 1.6 billion US dollars to improving the lives of the 26 million Chinese who still live in poverty.
At a global poverty reduction conference last year, the Chinese government committed to lifting China's 29 million poverty-stricken people out of financial strife by 2010. |
