Private, foreign capital to boost ecotourism in southern boomtown

South China's economic hub GuangZhou is planning to draw huge amounts of private and foreign capital this year to develop eight new tourist destinations with eco-friendly themes. Among the eight attractions will be forest parks and holiday resorts featuring hot springs, elegant hills, waters and an eco-friendly power station in Guangzhou, according Li Wenyao, head of the municipal tourism bureau. "We encourage the use of private and overseas capital in these ecotourism projects. In fact, many domestic and overseas businesses have expressed willingness to cooperate," said Li. For its part, the city government will play an active role in the overall management and planning of the projects, create a sound environment for fair competition among the investors and ensure handsome economic returns to them, he added. Amid a new tourism boom following the country's WTO entry, GuangZhou received over 79 million tourists in 2002, including some 1.3 million from overseas. Meanwhile, the city's tourism revenue climbed 10.91 percent year-on-year to 50.5 billion yuan (6billion US dollars), official figures show. |
