The Qinghai Lake, situated in northwest China's Qinghai province, has changed into a world of ice and snow at this time of the year in contrast to its summer landscape. A month-long ice and snow festival will kick off by the lake this month, which aims to build the province as China's second largest winter tourist base next to the northeast region.

At present, Qinghai has cultivated nearly one thousand scenic spots in the province and 30 of them gained worldwide fame. The province boasts of a long history, rich ethnic and religious resources in addition to its natural landscape. Last year, the province held its first ice sculpture festival by the Qinghai Lake and launched the country's largest open-air skating rink into operation as a trial run.

Every winter, the Qinghai Lake has two months of freezing period. This year, the province intends to build the lake as a tourist resource which has "Tour de Qinghai Lake" international cycling race in summer and ice and snow festival in winter.

At the coming ice and snow festival, an ice sculpture exhibition, with strong local feature, will cover an area of 2,800 square meters. In addition to the exhibition, a series of activities such as the winter sports activities, ethnic games on ice, ethnic singing and dancing will also be held. Visitors will also be invited to participate in ice carving.
