Railway approved to link Pearl River Delta cities
|
16-Mar-2004 - |
Beijing has approved plans to build a high-speed 965.4km rail network linking the nine major cities in the Pearl River. Three major lines, built in the shape of a huge letter A, will straddle the mighty waterway, linking all city rail systems, slashing travel times and skirting congested roads. Guangshen Railway board chairman, Mr Wu Junguang, said the green light for the massive proposal came from State Council. The three lines costing US$10 million will be constructed by 2010. Hong Kong, Macau, Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Zhuhai, Dongguan, Zhongshan, Foshan and Jiangmen will be connected, and Mr Wu said the network would turn the delta into an hour-economic-circle. Trains on the 132.5km GuangZhou to Shenzhen line could reach speeds of 200km per hour. |
