|
19-May-2011 - Global Times |
The Hainan Rare Plant and Sci-Tech Center opened on Wednesday after eight months of preparation, according to Chinanews.com on Thursday.
Located in the eastern part of Haikou, the capital of Hainan Province, the 110-mu (over 73,000 sqm) center displays approximately 430 species of rare and endangered plants that are peculiar to the tropical island.
Hainan Province boasts over 3,000 species of rare and endangered plants distributed throughout its terrain, which makes it challenging for people, especially the young, to get intimate access to large numbers of specimens at one time, according to Wang Shengjun, deputy director of Hainan Provincial Department of Science and Technology.
The center will try to bring in more rare plants in the future, Wang said. |
