The daily number of people crossing the Huanggang/Lok Ma Chau checkpoint between Hong Kong and Shenzhen in south China's Guangdong Province has risen by some 10,000 since the border was opened 24 hours on Jan. 27. More than 7,000 people -- about 10 percent of the daily total --are crossing between midnight and 6:30 a.m., when the Huanggang/Lok Ma Chau checkpoint used to be closed, according to data released by Shenzhen Port. Before the start of the 24-hour service, the number of crossings averaged over 50,000 daily. Now the figure is more than 60,000, and even up to 80,000 on busy days, according to Cao Shaoping, who is in charge of the port. The 24-hour crossings have spurred a boom in around-the-clock restaurants and snacks stalls on both sides of the checkpoint, Cao said. |
