S. China city to build more expressways
|
9-Apr-2003 - |
Shenzhen, a special economic zone in south China's Guangdong Province, has worked out an ambitious plan to extend its expressways by 339 kilometers by 2015,bringing easy access to every part of the city. By then, a comprehensive expressway network will run across the city linking all its suburban towns and villages with the city center, with driving times ranging from 10 to 30 minutes, said a source with the Shenzhen Communications Bureau. It will take only 70 minutes to drive by expressway to Nan'ao, the remotest town of the city, the source added. The city made headway in the development of expressways during the 1996-2000 period, but it is not yet compatible with the needs of the fast-growing economic development and the desire to build Shenzhen into an international metropolis. By the end of 2000, the city's expressway density stood at 7.7 km/million sq km, much lower than the density of 15.1 km/million sq km recorded in Singapore, said the source. |
