(www.cctv.com 2004-08-04) Direct sailing between the port of Xiamen, in East China's Fujian Province, and Quemoy Island of Taiwan, is playing an increasingly important role for residents on both sides of the Taiwan Strait. The number of passengers in the first half of this year soared to over 170 ,000, up more than two hundred and a half percent year-on-year. Service between Xiamen and Quemoy is twice a day. When it first began in early 2001, there were only 20,000 passengers every year. Now statistics from the Xiamen entry and exit checkpoint show that 34,000 passengers in June alone, and and 43,000 last month passed the checkpoint. It's expected to hit 300,000 by the end of the year. Meanwhile, the border control department has streamlined the procedure to get the travelers through in just 45 seconds. The distance between Xiamen and Quemoy is 18 nautical miles, a two-hour voyage. |
