Senior Mathematician Dies

18-Mar-2003 -
Su Buqing, a world-renowned mathematics scientist and honorary president of Fudan University, passed away in Shanghai East China Hospital at 4:45 pm Monday. Although doctors conducted emergency treatment, Su, aged 101, died of function failure of several organs, the hospital said. He had been confined there since 1995 for treatment of lung, kidney and liver problems. Su's infirmities had robbed him of his ability to speak. Born in neighboring Zhejiang Province in 1902, Su graduated from the mathematics department of Tohoku University in Tokyo, Japan, in 1927 and obtained a doctorate in science from the same university in 1931. Known as one of the founders of modern mathematics in China, Su won international recognition for his contribution to affine differential geometry and projective differential geometry. He was engaged in teaching and research of mathematics for more than 60 years. In 1949, when the People's Republic of China was established, Su became a professor at Fudan University -- one of China's most prestigious academic institutions -- and was promoted to president in 1978, serving in that capacity until his retirement in 1983. In 1955, he was elected as a member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. For Su, teaching the math science in school was just as important as his research. "His goal was to encourage students to make even greater academic achievements than his own," said Gu Chaohao, a CAS member.
