Shanghai is a coastal metropolis, but it lacks the scenery of blue sea and yellow sands. On July 6, the government of Fengxian District announced China's largest man-made beach had been built along Shanghai's southern coastline. Covered by yellow sands, with yellowish seawater near the coast changed into a wide expanse of blue by a special process.
Shanghai, where the Yangtze River empties into the East China Sea, had not witnessed blue water for years because of huge amounts of sands brought by the river. However, citizens always hope to watch the beautiful landscape of blue water and yellow sands in Shanghai. The local government spent 250 million yuan on this project, which was part of Shanghai's coastal service. The man-made beach covered an area of 790 thousand sq. meters, stretching for 1.3 kilometers from east to west, including 30-meter-wide coastal forests. Dykes have been set up to protect the beach. 120 thousand tons of high-quality sands were transported there from Hainan Province.
Newly developed technology allows seawater ranging in 680 sq. meters to be changed into blue, where it is safe for people to swim.
The man-made beach, scheduled to open to the public on July 13, can contain 5,000 swimmers at a time. It also plans to provide entertainment items including motorboat travel, surfing, floating boat adventure, etc.
In 2009, this place will become a coastal industrial center that can provide a variety of services. A new residential quarter is also under construction, in which some 100 thousand people will live. |
