Shanghai invites bids for developing extended Bund

Shanghai, China's leading industrial and commercial center, is soliciting designs for developing the eastern section of the Huangpu River. Yuan Yuebin, deputy head of the Yangpu District, said authorities planned to develop a 15.5 km Yangpu stretch of the Huangpu River, or the eastern section of the extended Bund, into a place where luxury residential quarters mingle with modern office buildings. The Huangpu, dubbed Shanghai's mother river, cuts through the city and empties into the East China Sea at Wusongkou. The existing Bund, the central western bank of the river, contains numerous exotic ancient buildings under state protection. "Through the development, the eastern section of the extended Bund will be turned into a riverside resort showcasing a combination of traditional culture and landscapes," said Yuan, who considers the plan an important step for Shanghai to achieve new levels of progress in the next five years. Domestic and overseas bidders willing to participate in designing and developing the extended Bund section may apply to the appropriate departments of the Yangpu government, according to Yang. The eastern part of the extended Bund is the birthplace of China's modern industries and houses Shanghai's largest marketplace for aquatic products. |
