Shanghai Mayor Chen Liangyu hailed his city's successful bid to host the World Expo 2010 after the International Bureau of Exhibitions (BIE) revealed final voting results at its 132nd general assembly here on Tuesday. "Today is a memorable day. It is the day when the BIE chooses Shanghai, chooses China, and chooses a developing country for the first time in its history. From the bottom of my heart, I thank you all for your trust and goodwill," Chen told reporters after the voting by all 89 member states of the BIE. "We will do honor to this rare opportunity by redoubling our preparation so as to present all participating countries with the best facilities and most satisfactory services. We look forward to the broadest participation in the Shanghai event, bringing together the best of the world's colorful cultures and maximizing opportunities for understanding, friendship and cooperation," the mayor said. "I am convinced that the Shanghai World Expo will be an extraordinary success and a perpetual memory thanks to your enthusiastic participation," Chen said, referring to all the representatives from countries attending the assembly. Situated on the western margin of the Pacific, Shanghai was once famous as "the Paris of the Orient" in the 1920's and the 1930's, and has attracted the whole world's attention with its great achievements since the opening and reform policy was initiated in China in the late 1970's. |
