|
15-Apr-2002 - |
The eastern Chinese city of Shanghai has been chosen to host the 2005 table tennis individual world championships, the sports governing body has announced. Shanghai easily won a vote at the annual meeting of the International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) in Zagreb, securing 78 votes against 31 for the only other bidder, Lausanne in Switzerland, the ITTF announced recently. From next year, the world championships will be split into individual and team events, a decision made previously by the ITTF. Paris will host the individual world championships in 2003 with Qatar organising the team event the next year. China, the world's dominant table tennis nation, won every single title on offer at the world championships in Osaka, Japan, last year, which featured both individual and team events. The sport is taken extremely seriously in China and top stars like women's world champion Wang Nan and men's title holder Wang Liqin are feted as heroes. |
