Shanxi reports decline in coal output
|
16-Jun-2005 - Xinhua |
Coal output in north China's Shanxi Province reported a decline of 20 million tons, or 14 percent, in the first four months over the same period last year, local resources said early this week.
Raw coal output totaled 122.91 million tons, including 80.46 million tons from the key state-owned collieries and 42.45 million tons from private companies.
The drop mainly came from private companies, which reported a decrease of 30 million tons or 41.7 percent in output, while the state-owned coal mines registered a rise of 10 million tons duringthe same period.
Experts attributed the decline to new safety measures taken by the numerous private collieries. Most of them stopped production when they couldn't get licenses to resume production. By May 20, only 807 of 1,484 coal mines which submitted applications for licenses got permission.
Experts worry that the decrease of coal production in Shanxi, the country's leading coal producer, will limit supply and make prices soar as the peak of power usage draws near across the country.
