Shenzhen authorities ban border pickups
|
8-Mar-2004 - |
Travel agents, tour groups and FIT travelers were thrown into chaos and confusion when the mainland port authorities in Shenzhen suddenly imposed new rules banning passenger pickups at the border. Only a few hours' notice was given. The change makes it much more difficult, especially for regular travelers. A Shenzhen official said the ban on picking up passengers was aimed at speeding up the flow of traffic. The checkpoint had turned into a bus terminus and meant there were constant traffic jams, he complained. In recent months, coaches were jammed as scores of touts tried to sell scalped tickets to hundreds of jostling customers. Instead of long distance buses pulling up to the checkpoint, passengers going through immigration and then continuing to Hong Kong, the vehicles were delayed as customers fought for tickets. Hong Kong police and transport officials met mainland authorities to try to find a solution. |
