Large-scale transformation of the seaport and airport is in full swing in Shenzhen, a booming business center in south China. Total investment from the local government will amount to 30 billion yuan (3.62 billion US dollars) during the 2001-2005 period,an official said recently. Under the 10th five-year plan, the city will spend 15.65 billion yuan (1.89 billion US dollars) in refurbishing port facilities and constructing 10 new container berths with a combined handling capacity of 36.2 million tons a year. Efforts will also be made to improve the business environment so as to attract more domestic and overseas ships to Shenzhen, said the official from the city communication department. In the meantime, some 15 billion yuan (1.81 billion US dollars) will be earmarked for upgrading the airport, including the construction of a new runway and a new terminal building, as well as related cargo transport facilities and ground systems. Shenzhen, which sees Hong Kong across a river, has become an export-oriented processing base and one of China's key export players. |
