China's ship building capacity is expected to surpass 10 million dead weight tonnages (DWT) this year, accounting for 18 percent of the world total.
Vice Minister of the State Commission of Science, Technology and Industry for National Defense Zhang Guangqin made the remarks at a press conference Thursday in Beijing.
Zhang Guangqin noted that after twenty years of development, China has become a major ship building nation capable of producing ships that meet various international standards and navigate all types of sea waters.
He added China now produces some marine products that have reached or are approaching world advanced level.
China's ship production capacity in 2004 was 8.8 million DWT, and accounted for 14% of the world total. China has ranked third worldwide in ship building capacity for the past ten consecutive years.
