South China city to spend more on urban works
|
6-Dec-2001 - |
Guangzhou, one of the major gates to the outside world in south China, will spend about 80 billion yuan (about 9.64 billion US dollars) on construction of urban infrastructure during the tenth five-year-plan period (2001- 2005). A local official said their goal is to build Guangzhou, also capital of Guangdong Province, into a modern central city suitable for business development and offering conveniences for daily life. According to the official, 29 major urban works will be built during the 2001-2005 period, including the second and third metro lines, the new GuangZhou Baiyun International Airport, the expressway and light rail to the new airport, and four wastewater treatment plants. Construction of urban works will be carried out strictly according to an overall development plan of GuangZhou which divides the city into several zones. With more and more industrial businesses and a growing number of people being evacuated from the old downtown city area, the north of the city is reserved for protection of water resources and forests, the eastern part will be a center of port-related businesses, while the southern part will be set aside for university campuses, residential quarters and tourism.
