Building work has commenced on half of the 71 projects to be developed in Tibet with assistance from other Chinese provinces, a local government official said in Lhasa recently. Eight projects have begun in accordance with a decision made by the central government last June on boosting development in the region. Tibet has received 35 billion yuan so far this year for the projects which cover transport, telecommunications, education, urban engineering and Tibetan medicine production. The central government and other Chinese provinces have assisted Tibet in numerous projects concerning economic growth and people's livelihoods over the past 50 years. They include hospitals, schools, power stations, television and telephone schemes. The Tibet Autonomous Region has built a medical care network for residents in both urban and rural areas over the past decade. Residents in the arid city of Xigaze will stop relying on wells at street corners for fresh water after a new water plant was built with funds provided by Shanghai, China's largest financial center. The waterworks provide 17 million tons of running water a day, which is enough for the daily consumption of 40,000 people. Anshan City, in northeast China's Liaoning Province, has sent officials with books, computers and other teaching materials to help promote educational development in Tibet. Guangdong and Fujian provinces have invested 60 million yuan in building 10 small towns in Nyingchi Prefecture in southeastern Tibet, where 90 percent of the prefecture's 20,000 residents live in poor mountainous areas. |
