Storm Takes Sandy Toll on Resort Beaches

21-Jul-2006 - china.org
The recent windy weather has left Shanghai's two manmade sand resorts with less sand, but more unhappy guests.

The Golden Beach in Fengxian District, opened on July 13, was touched by Tropical Storm Bilis on its second business day. The beach diving area was closed until last Sunday. But visitors complained about the blowing sand which stuck to the skin.

As Shanghai has no natural sand beaches, the Golden Beach sand, 12 tons in total, came from Hainan Island. Within the diving area, a sand beach extends for 1,300 meters. The beach is separated from the real sea water with a dike, 2 meters high and 1,000 meters long.

"The dike is supposed to block the wind," said Chen Jianguo, resort administration office spokesman.

Chen claimed the Hainan beach sand is heavier and bigger, compared to beaches near Shanghai. However this time the sand wasn't heavy enough to stay on ground.

Similar problems also occurred at the City Beach in Jinshan District, only the results were worse. Opened in 2004, the City Beach often holds beach volleyball matches. Its sand was taken from Dongting Lake beach in Hunan Province.

After Tropical Storm Bilis last week, sands were blown to audience seats at the volleyball court.

"It happens every time when a strong wind hits," said Yu Jianlin, staff at the City Beach management department. "The sand is soft, dry and comfortable to walk on, but it doesn't stay in wind."

Every year the resort has to add sand to make up the loss. Two bulldozers pushed the sand back to the beach after Bilis.

Now the City Beach is setting up 40 water-spray outlets around the beach.

"We hope the wetness could stabilize the sand," said Zhang Qiong, vice general manager of the City Beach Development Committee.

Natural beaches are made of sand washed up by sea waves, and they can recover after windy weather, said Liu Acheng, local ocean geologist.

"But artificial beaches don't have waves to bring up sands, hence they disappear fast if no measures are taken," said Liu.

The Jinshan City Beach is now planning to build a 6-meter-wide greenbelt between sand beach and roads.
