Baiyunguan Taoist Temple, which was built in 1882, will be moved 2 kilometers north to its original site on Xilinhou Road in Nanshi District. The new site is next to the three-story Dajingge Pavilion, which was erected beside the Shanghai Old City Wall during the Ming Dynasty. Having more than 120 years' history, the Baiyunguan Taoist Temple is the most famous Taoist building in the city. With the city's rapid development, protecting unique old buildings has become an important task for the city government. The old site of the Baiyunguan Temple will be razed to make way for a massive residential area with easy access to the World Expo site, according to Fang Zhongxue, deputy director of the project. The relocation project was approved in May 2002 to make way for the residential project as well as to join the two old buildings together. Fang said the structure of the new temple will be the same as the old one, a typical southern-China building with a courtyard house. Work on moving the temple began last year, and the final move should be finished by August. The whole project is expected to cost nearly 11.13 million yuan (US$1.34 million) and occupy 1,543 square meters, Fang said. Late last year, the Shanghai Music Hall was moved several hundred meters to escape excess noise at its old location. |
