Teijin to produce PC resin in China

Japan's Teijin Ltd. said on Monday it would start producing polycarbonate (PC) resin in China to meet growing demand for the heat-resistant material.
Teijin Chemicals Ltd., a wholly owned subsidiary of the maker of polyester fibre and pharmaceuticals, will start production on May 27 at a plant in Jiaxing, Zhijiang Province, a spokesman said. The plant has an annual output capacity of 50,000 tonnes.
Demand for PC resin used in CDs, DVDs and other electronic devices is in short supply worldwide.
A second plant is scheduled to go into production in December 2006, doubling the company's annual production of PC resin to about 100,000 tonnes, Teijin said.
Investment in the two plants will total 26-27 billion yen ($240-250 million).
The Teijin group's current PC resin production at plants in Matsuyama, Ehime Prefecture, and Singapore, is about 320,000 tonnes a year.
